Glossary: Telegram marketing terms
Short definitions of what comes up in the articles and in the dashboard. Every term links to the full explanation — here it is two or three sentences.
Collecting data
- Parsing
- Automated collection of public data: channels and chats by keyword, group members, people who commented under a post. Only what somebody showed publicly can be collected. Read more
- Keywords and combinations
- What the parser searches by. One word returns noise; requiring two words together returns an intersection, which is what a niche actually is. Read more
- Username
- A public @name a person sets themselves. Without one, a stranger cannot start a conversation — the internal account identifier does not work for that. Read more
- List
- A collected set of channels, groups or people. It decays: channels close and change subject, people change usernames and privacy settings. Read more
- Dead channel
- A channel unusable for work: not publishing, comments off, subject changed or deleted. Subscriber count says nothing about this. Read more
- Active member
- Someone who writes in a chat rather than merely belonging to it. The member list and the list of people talking differ in kind, not degree. Read more
- Audience overlap
- The share of people subscribed to several channels in the same field. Because of it, the reach of five channels is not the sum of their subscribers. Read more
- Segmentation
- Splitting a collected list by source, recency and signs of activity. One message to the whole list is the simplest approach and the weakest. Read more
Accounts and safety
- Session
- An authorised connection between an account and a client. A .session file holds an authorisation key rather than a password: whoever has it acts as the account. Read more
- Spam block
- A restriction on messaging strangers. It is silent: messages send and never arrive, and the only way to know is to ask the official support bot. Read more
- Warm-up
- The period when a new account behaves like an ordinary user and sends nothing. It saves time rather than spending it: an unwarmed account rarely lives long enough to pay off. Read more
- Proxy
- A separate network address per account. A shared address links accounts together, and a restriction on one raises the risk for the rest. Read more
- Account fingerprint
- Device, system, app version and language travelling with every session. An identical set across ten accounts links them regardless of proxies. Read more
- Limits
- The thresholds anti-spam reacts to. Telegram does not publish them, they depend on account age and they change — any exact figure online is somebody's observation. Read more
- Quiet hours
- A window when the account does nothing. Round-the-clock activity does not occur among real users and is visible without any content analysis. Read more
- Cloud password
- Two-step verification. Without it, whoever holds the number gets the account with the login code; with it, the code alone is not enough. Read more
- Virtual number
- A rented number used for registration. Services resell the same number repeatedly, and the account eventually leaves with it. Read more
Working an audience
- Comment marketing
- Substantive replies under fresh posts in other channels. They carry no links — the route to you runs through the profile. Read more
- Discussions
- The group attached to a channel where comments on posts appear. Without it a channel cannot be commented on. Read more
- First comment
- A reply at the top of a thread. Everyone who opens the discussion reads the top ones; almost nobody reads the bottom. Read more
- Chat presence
- Taking part in group conversation. Unlike commenting, people come to recognise you: better contacts, considerably more time. Read more
- Prompt
- The instruction given to a model: who is speaking, what counts as a good reply and what must never be written. Weak text is nearly always a weak prompt. Read more
- Knowledge base
- The description of product, prices and boundaries a model answers from. Everything missing from it gets invented. Read more
- Handover
- The point where a conversation moves from the model to a person: custom terms, a complaint, a question outside the brief. Read more
- Qualification
- Establishing the job, the timing and whether this is the person who decides. Three questions, one per message, not a form. Read more
Channels and growth
- Inflated channel
- Bought subscribers and views. Visible in the ratio of views to subscribers: the counter grows, the reach does not. Read more
- Paid post
- A placement bought in someone else's channel. The fastest way to gain subscribers and the fastest way to lose money — decided before payment. Read more
- Cross-promotion
- An exchange of posts with another channel. Costs nothing, works when audiences overlap and sizes are comparable. Read more
- Invite link
- A channel link, of which several can exist. Telegram shows how many joined through each — the only way to see the source of a subscription inside the app. Read more
- Cost per subscriber
- Total spend over a period divided by the subscribers who stayed. Count who remains after a month, not who arrived. Read more
- Churn
- Unsubscribes. Some are normal and cannot be prevented; the warning is a spike after one post, or losses outpacing joins. Read more
- Pinned post
- The message at the top of a channel that everyone arriving for the first time sees. The most underused element there is. Read more
- Moderator
- The person deciding the fate of your comment and your presence in a chat. They judge not whether you sell but whether the reply added anything. Read more
