A session is an authorised connection between one account and one client. Every device you log in from creates one, and Telegram keeps them all — that is why the same account can be open on a phone, a laptop and a script at once.

What the file holds

When software works on your behalf, the session lives in a file. It contains an authorisation key, not your password: whoever holds that file can act as the account without knowing anything else about it.

Two practical consequences. Back the files up, because losing one means logging in again with a code. And treat them as credentials — a leaked session file is a handed-over account.

Why sessions end

  • Someone terminated it. Ending other sessions in the security settings kills every connection but the current one. Sold or transferred accounts are routinely cleaned this way by their previous owner.
  • A suspicious login. A sudden change of address or device can end the session on its own — see the account fingerprint.
  • The account was logged in again elsewhere with the same parameters, and one connection displaced the other.
  • A restriction or a ban. Different problem, same symptom.

Checking what is open

The list of active sessions is in the security settings of any Telegram client, and it shows device, application and approximate location for each. It is worth reading occasionally: an entry you do not recognise means the account is not only yours.

Sessions and proxies

A session remembers nothing about the network; the proxy is the client's setting. But if the same session appears from a different country every day, that pattern is visible and it is what looks stolen. Stability matters more than speed — proxies for Telegram accounts.

When a session cannot be restored

If the phone number is gone and no other session is alive, there is nothing to log in with. That is the whole argument against disposable numbers — virtual numbers and recovering a locked account.
