Without two-step verification, whoever receives the SMS owns the account. When the number is rented, resold or shared, that is not a hypothetical — it is the normal end of the account's life.
What it actually protects
With a cloud password set, a login code alone is not enough: the password is asked for as well, and it exists only in your head. Someone who obtains the number gets a code and a dead end.
This is the single cheapest protection available for a working account, and the one most often skipped because it takes two minutes and nothing visibly changes afterwards.
The recovery email is the important half
Telegram offers to attach an email when you set the password. Skipping it feels tidier and is a trap: a forgotten password with no email leaves only account reset — a wait measured in days and the loss of message history.
With an email attached, the password comes back in a letter. Attach it at the same time as the password, not later, because "later" does not happen.
Where to keep the passwords
A different password per account, stored somewhere you actually control. A shared password across a fleet turns one leak into all of them, and a fleet whose passwords live in a chat message is not protected at all.
What it does not protect against

One practical warning
Turning it on has a side effect worth knowing: some restrictions and support flows behave differently for accounts with a cloud password. Set it up before the account starts working, not in the middle of an incident. Related: recovering a locked account.
