Restrictions in Telegram are neither random nor instant. They escalate in steps, and the step tells you what to do.
The steps
- FloodWait. A timed pause for acting too fast. A brake, not a penalty.
- Spam restriction. No messaging strangers. Lifted by appeal, sometimes on the first try.
- Account limitation. More actions unavailable, for longer.
- Ban. The account is off. Appeals rarely help.
What triggers a spam restriction
- Complaints. The main cause. A few reports from different people trigger it regardless of volume.
- Bulk messages to strangers. A direct rule violation.
- Identical text. The most visible automation marker.
- Speed. Actions faster than a person performs them.
- A fresh account acting heavily. No history means a lower threshold.
What leads to a ban
Repeated violations after restrictions, mass complaints in a short window, and prohibited content. A ban is not the automatic next step after a restriction — an account can work under one for years without being banned.
What does not
Using automation as such. The rules prohibit spam, not programmatic access. An account that comments substantively and does not message strangers lives a long time. Protections are on the automation page.
