The symptom looks like broken software: stories go out, mentions are in place, replies never come. The cause is almost always in the account settings rather than in the tool.
What happens
Telegram stories have visibility rules: everyone, contacts only, everyone except some. If a story is visible to contacts only, a mentioned stranger gets the notification — the mention worked — and opens it to find nothing. No error is shown to either side.
How it must be set
- Story visibility: everyone. Any narrower setting cuts out exactly the people the story is for.
- The profile open enough to be written to. Closed direct messages break the last step — more on reachability.
How to check
Post a story and mention a second account of yours that is not in the first one's contacts. If the second account sees the content, settings are fine. If only the notification arrives, they are not.
Check again after changing account settings and after recovering access: app updates occasionally restore defaults.
What this does not fix
Open visibility does not make the caption interesting. It only removes the reason nothing works at all. If replies are still missing, the story itself is the problem — what to write in it.
