How many comments per lead

The four steps of the commenting funnel, where most of the loss happens and how to get numbers you can actually act on.

How many comments per lead

The question sounds like it wants a number and the honest answer is «it depends» — but the dependency is measurable. The funnel has four steps and each loses a predictable share.

The four steps

  1. The comment gets seen. Depends on how many people read discussions under that post and how fast you were: early comments get read far more.
  2. They open your profile. Depends on the comment. A useful reply earns clicks; generic praise earns nothing.
  3. They write to you. Depends on the profile: name, avatar, bio, pinned message. This is the only step you fix once and benefit from forever.
  4. The dialogue becomes a lead. Depends on reply speed and on how quickly the offer becomes clear.

Where the loss concentrates

Almost always at step two. A comment written to fill a slot produces no clicks at all — it reads as noise. The gap between filler and substance here is not percentage points, it is multiples.

The second bottleneck is step three, and it is the cheapest to fix. An empty profile cancels everything before it: the visitor arrives, fails to work out who you are, and leaves. An hour spent on the profile pays back faster than any other change.

Getting your own numbers

Measure the steps separately rather than the ratio end to end. Then you know what to fix: few clicks means the comment text; clicks without dialogues means the profile; dialogues without leads means the conversation. Expect hundreds of comments before the first leads in a new niche, and far fewer once the funnel is tuned — which is why starting small is cheaper. The step-by-step measurement is in this piece.
