Neighbourhood chats are the closest thing to a local customer and the fastest way to burn a reputation. How to be present without advertising.

Telegram for local business: how city chats actually work

For a trade, a clinic, a cafe or a repair service, a neighbourhood chat is the shortest distance to a customer that exists. It is also the quickest way to be remembered badly.

How a city chat differs from a topic chat

In a topic chat people gathered around an interest, and a professional who answers well is welcome. In a neighbourhood chat people gathered around a place, they know each other, and an advertisement reads as an intrusion into shared space.

The moderator is usually a resident, not a hired admin. Their decision is final and there is no appeal.

What works

  • Answering a direct question. "Who fixed your washing machine?" is an invitation. Answer usefully, without a price list.
  • A useful fact in your field. About the problem, not about you: what to check, what to avoid.
  • Being present outside your topic. Someone who occasionally joins ordinary conversation reads as a neighbour rather than a billboard.

What never works

A post advertising yourself. Even once, even politely, even prefaced with "may I". In most residential chats that is rule number one, and the breach is remembered long after the ban.

The second mistake is answering every question in your field instantly and always. Someone who is visibly on duty irritates as much as an advertisement.

Finding the chats

Not by city name — that finds federal news channels. Local communities are named after districts, developments, streets and stations, so the keyword list is a list of place names. See keyword research for parsing.

Check them for life before investing time: many are created when a building fills up and die shortly after — cleaning a database.

The first week

Join and read. Do not write on day one — in many chats a new member cannot, and in the rest the first message from a new account gets read by a moderator personally. What you are looking for in that week is the local norm: how people talk here and what the pinned rules say.

How Neurogram does this

Everything above is manual work that runs into the number of hours in a day. Neurogram does it on your own accounts and without you: it collects channels and audiences, writes comments and replies with a language model, and keeps limits and quiet hours so the accounts survive. See pricing or look at your case.
